Skyline Lanes revamps and adds entertainment options

Skyline Lanes bowling center in Duluth, Minnesota, will officially emerge from a $3 million refurbishment Sept. 27. The family entertainment center will offer 40 new arcade games, a new game called "Duckpin!", a remodeled restaurant, an expanded bar and redesigned party venues. The center also debuted a Hologate virtual reality attraction. People have been throwing strikes and spares at Skyline Lanes since 1956. But the traditional bowling alley feel has gotten a major upgrade, thanks to a $3 million dollar plus remodel.

Corey Kolquist, general manager, explains. "It was time to re-invest. Reinvent ourselves. The traditional bowling center doesn't really exist anymore. You need to adapt into a family entertainment center or become boutique bowling. And we chose the entertainment center!" The arcade has been revamped, with forty new games. Birthday party areas feature glow-in-the-dark paint. The restaurant has been remodeled and has a new menu. The bar has been expanded, and alongside of it is a new game called Duckpin! It's similar to bowling, but with shorter lanes. You get three tries per frame. And you don't need to rent shoes. The really unique addition is the virtual reality area called Hologate. "There are only two in Minnesota, with 250 in the whole country," Kolquist said. "It's a worldwide leader in virtual entertainment." We got to try it out. You put on a vest and headset, and get ready to go! You can play team games or against one another. Each is 8 minutes long. There's also a virtual reality game in the arcade, which makes you feel like you're on a rollercoaster. Kolquist said they've hired about 20 people to manage all of the new space, but still need more to help them run the entire experience. (2019/09/30)
