The 23rd GTI Asia Taipei Expo took place on April 28-30 at B & C Zones of Hall 1 of the Taipei World Trade Center.  Jointly organized by the Taiwan Amusement Machine Association (TAMA), Taiwan Digital Entertainment Association (TDEA) and Haw Ji/Game Time International, this grand annual event of the Taiwan electronic game industry presented the latest game and parts products and brought an abundant visual feast for visitors.

Invited by the show organizers, on the first day of the show many government officials and industry representatives attended the opening ceremony and jointly cut the ribbon to commence the GTI Asia Taipei Expo 2016.  There were government leaders including Tsai Ing-wen, the president-elect of Taiwan and leader of the Democratic Progressive Party, Special Assistant Kao Chien-chih to the President of the Legislative Yuan, Deputy Director General Leu Jang-hwa of the Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of economic Affairs (MOEA), Director General Lee May of the Department of Commerce, MOEA, Chief Secretary chen Yong-chang of the Bureau of Foreign Trade, MOEA, Director General Yeh Yun-lung of the Small and Medium Enterprise Administration, MOEA, Deputy Chairman Lai Po-ssu of the Manufacturers United General Association of Industrial Park, and Secretary-General Huang Wen-jung of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council as well as industry representatives like Chairman Zhen-kun Yeh of the Taiwan Family Entertainment Development Association, Vice Chairman You-te Chiang of the National Recreational Trade Association, Chairman Wen-bin Lai of the Gift Claim Vendor Association of Taiwan.

Afterwards, TAMA Chairman Tsai Chi-ming and TDEA Chairman Wei Ming-shan went on the stage and made remarks to kick off this year’s GTI Asia Taipei Expo. Taiwan’s president-elect, Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen, who will soon take office on May 20, stated, “The administration is proactively deepening its understanding of the industry’s needs.  Entering its 23rd year, GTI Asia Taipei Expo is not only a vital event for the Asia-Pacific Region market but also an important show for the global electronic game industry.  It can fully demonstrate Taiwanese companies’ capabilities and competitiveness.  After many years of efforts, Taiwanese companies have transformed themselves.  They have evolved from OEM manufacturing to independently designing and manufacturing products and gained a foothold in the global market.  Creating NT$30 billion in production value each year, the Taiwan electronic game industry not only is the representative of MIT (Made-In-Taiwan) pride, but has also demonstrated Taiwan’s momentum in innovation and development.  Electronic game machines can provide the social functions of edutainment and relaxation.  From now on, the government will work with the industry and listen to the needs of the industry to support the industry’s development.  Many guests here today are old friends and can come to me with your suggestions and needs in the future.”

After her speech, Tsai Ing-wen briefly tried the eye-dazzling “Spin Zone” prize machine, which featured plush toys of the popular well-known cartoon character Gudetama.  Her visit to the show left the industry with tremendous hopes.  In the evening of that day, the show organizers arranged a dinner reception for exhibitors at the Banquet Hall of the Taipei City Hall.  Highlighted by exciting activities, the banquet gathered many local companies as well as exhibitors and industry professionals from other countries.

Exhibiting for the first time, GTI new forces!

Key reason behind the industry’s lackluster performance: relevant laws

Regarding electronic game arcades in Taiwan, the survey we conducted in 2006 showed that Taiwan had a total of 4,396 electronic game arcades (including those that closed down and suspended business) in that year; the statistics provided by the Department of Commerce indicates that in January 2016 there were only 2,110 electronic game arcades (including those that closed down and suspended business).  The data revealed that electronic game arcades in Taiwan declined by 50% in the last decade.  Now looking at the scale of GTI Asia Taipei Expo, the show recorded 900-plus booths at its peak in 2005 but its scale has declined by half to 400-plus stands in 2016.

With respect to the factors leading to the current conditions, we need to explore them from the facet of law and policy as well as the industry status and market landscape.  Since the “Electronic Game Arcade Business Regulation Act” was promulgated and implemented in 2000, restricted-category electronic game arcades have been under official regulation.  But, what is perplexing is that education-category electric game arcades are confined by the same standards as the restricted category of electronic game arcades.  The measure has caused the number of education-category electronic game arcades throughout Taiwan to plummet to merely a few dozen.  Therefore, many industry members left the Taiwan market and moved to China, which has indirectly contributed to the rise of China’s game machine market.  Taipei City has relaxed the rules and requirements for the application of setting up education-category electronic game arcades over recent years.  The city has actually unprecedentedly granted two licenses for establishing education-category electronic game arcades between 2014 and 2015.  However, it’s such a shame that, at that point of time, Taiwanese consumers’ recreational habits and entertainment activities have dramatically changed.

If the arcade game industry lacked the fundamental support of the domestic market, it would suffer more serious influence when the international market suddenly changed.  The financial crisis in 2008 caused the economies of Europe and America to slump and, accordingly, impacted the performance of Taiwanese companies in export markets.  On the other hand, China experienced a major turn in law and policy a few years ago and hence led to a setback for many Taiwanese companies developing business in China.

This year’s show featured 11 exhibitors from Taiwan and China participating in GTI Asia Taipei Expo for the first time.  These new faces have brought new atmosphere and energy.

Yi Eel Shang returns to the stage of GTI Asia Taipei Expo this year, presenting single-player and two-player crane machines, linked crane machines and prize machines.

At the Youal-Jifh stand, there are crane machines, prize machines and pinball machines.

The world’s partners! Indispensable “small” products

The market of Japan has also been in the doldrums.  According to the survey conducted by the Japan Productivity Center in 2015, the market size of arcade game establishments in Japan reached 711 billion Japanese yen, but now is only 399 billion yen, representing a 43.9% decrease in only 7 years.  However, the market size of online social games in Japan has soared to above 854 billion yen, more than double the arcade sector.  Therefore, many Japanese companies whose core products used to be arcade games have made major shifts in their market strategies.

Dedicated to being the world’s loyal supplier partners, Taiwan-made parts products and Taiwanese manufacturers have gained global presence and support and are not absent from GTI Asia Taipei Expo each year.

Zeroplus has brought games like “Shooting Sports” and “Trap Shooting” to this year’s show and also holds exciting activities to have fun together with players.

Pan Asia distributes popular games for Taiwanese and Japanese game developers and introduces a number of new games at the show.
