Myanmar to enact new Gambling Act (2018/9/25) |
Myanmar's lower house parliament approves gambling bill. The country's lower house passed a bill on September 12 providing for the regulations of gambling. Lower House parliamentarian Nay Myo Tun from Htantapin Constituency said: “The Public Affairs Management Committee submitted the proposal to the bill committee which forwarded it to the parliament. It was discussed by 12 MPs at parliament. They amended some phrases in the bill. This is not a casino law. The casino law has many sections.” The Public Affairs Committee of Lower House Parliament drafted the gambling law and then submitted it to the session of lower house parliament on August 21, Eleven Myanmar reported. The move aims to ensure the emergence of a gambling law, control new gambling methods and allow State lottery and casino gambling. The gambling bill covers six chapters and 23 paragraphs. One new chapter is added to the gambling bill. The bill committee added Chapter-7 which includes Para-22 (only the Internal Revenue Department under the Ministry of Planning and Finance can do the State lottery business) and Para-23 (the Union government can allow the establishment of casinos at the designated places to which only foreigners have access). But casino gambling will not be allowed in the cultural heritage areas. The current gambling law 1968 was drafted in the time of the socialist government is outdated and not in conformity with the current administrative pattern. |
