Win-win Cooperation: The First AEGAE Expo

Serena Zheng / Jasmin Zhuang

On August 21st, under the guidance of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China, the first Asian Electronic Game & Amusement Equipment Expo (AEGAE Expo) organized by Guangdong Entertainment & Game Industry Association and ComAsia Limited (Hong Kong) was launched at BITEC, Bangkok, Thailand.

A number of distinguished leaders and elites from various industries attended the opening ceremony, such as Liu Lian, Deputy Director of Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China, Lu xiaokun, Executive Chairman of Guangdong Entertainment & Game Industry Association, Zhaozhong Chan, director of ComAsia Limited, Sakchai Pattarapreechakul, President of NCC Exhibition, Nichapa Yoswee, Vice President of Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau. Several leading guests delivered speeches on stage, expressing their high expectations for the exhibition and the China-Thailand game and amusement industry.

Thailand is located at the junction of the east-west economic corridor and the north-south economic corridor, and its geographical location is superior. The Trans-Asian Railway, Mekong River, Kunming - Bangkok Road, and Thailand’s Kra Canal further strengthen Thailand's central position in the ASEAN economic circle. In recent years, the Thai government has continuously introduced advanced technology, favorable policies, actively carried out urban planning and developed tourism industry, and launched the development plan of “Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC, Thailand's 4.0 Strategic Flagship Project)”, aiming to build a regional platform for Thailand's industrial upgrading, to drive the whole industrial structure adjustment and to promote the development of the social economy and national industrialization.

According to Japanese media reports, data released by the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) announced that the amount of direct investment from overseas from January to June 2019 (according to the application amount) reached 147.1 billion baht (about 4.9 billion USD), 2.1 times that of the same period last year. The geographical advantages, investment environment and preferential policies of the "Eastern Economic Corridor" provide good cooperation opportunities for Chinese enterprises that are responding to the Belt and Road Initiative. In the first half of this year, China ranked second in direct investment in Thailand, reaching 24.2 billion baht (about 804 million USD), up 5.3 times year-on-year.

Its economy has also lived up to expectations, with the Thai baht has appreciated 6.03%, a six-year high, effectively consolidating its position as Asia's best-performing currency against the U.S. dollar in 2019 and becoming the highest appreciating currency in the world. Economic development will certainly promote the national entertainment demand, which in turn will drive the development of the entire entertainment industry.

On one hand, AEGAE Expo provides Thailand with an alternative platform to meet the growing demand of entertainment, on the other hand, it also provides a window for the game and amusement related enterprises in China and southeast Asian countries. In view of Thailand's rapidly growing economic situation and promising game and amusement market, Lichun Chen, VP of Business of GTI, and Serena Zheng, representative of overseas department, went to AEGAE Expo for promotion.

According to the onsite survey of GTI, AEGAE Expo attracted nearly 60 well-known game and amusement enterprises from China, Thailand, India and other countries to participate in the exhibition, most of which were Chinese enterprises, including Jiuyou, Tongli, Zhanhui, Arccer, Superwing, Sealy, ACE, Yuan Gong, Qintong, Colorful Sky, Childhood, PDL, Pan Asia, TongMaoXing, Sea, Queji, Puzzle&Happy, Huangyue, Paokai, Rufeng, Shunhong, Cheer, Neofuns, G-Look, Dodobird, Golden Dragon, Airo, Wahlap, Sungame, Do Do, UNIS, Tengshun, Boyun, Flying, Yuehua, Yonee, Golden Eagle, ESUN, Debisheng, Zhichangxing, to name just a few. In addition, Guangzhou Panyu Animation & Game Association, Zhongshan Gaming & Amusement Association, Guangdong Entertainment & Game Industry Association and GTI, along with other industry media actively participated.

The exhibits included simulator, parent-child amusement equipment, bowling, boxing machine, hockey equipment, pinball machine, basketball machine, exchange machine, self-service all-in-one machine, arcade games, water amusement equipment, scenic spot equipment, VR, as well as Garage Kits, ball washing machines and other related products. Among them, there were more simulators and they were very popular, VR were fewer, and there were no gift machines because they are listed as gambling machines in Thailand.

During this visit to AEGAE Thailand exhibition, the GTI team mainly achieved the following tasks:
First, we explored the first AEGAE Expo and investigated the game and amusement market in Thailand.
Second, on behalf of Chinese game and amusement enterprises, GTI distributed China Amuse and Game Time International to promote Chinese products to overseas professional buyers. At the same time, GTI also collected a lot of buyer information from Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, Laos, Pakistan, and Malaysia.
Third, GTI invited professional buyers to visit the GTI Asia China Expo and GTI Taipei Expo in Taiwan from April 16 to 18, 2020. The 12th GTI Asia China Expo will be held in China Import and Export Fair Pazhou Complex on September 9-11.
