■ Serena Zheng

Saudi Entertainment and Amusement (SEA) expo, the first trade event dedicated to Saudi Arabia’s entertainment and leisure sector organized by dmg events took place from 21-23 April 2019 at the Jeddah Centre for Forums & Events.

SEA expo was held successfully by dmg events at Jeddah Centre from 21-23 April.

SEA expo was inaugurated by Bader AlHokair, Deputy CEO – Western Region, with over 4000 industry professionals attending the exhibition. Saudi Arabia’s announcement to invest $64 billion into developing the entertainment industry as part of Vision 2030 has resulted in social and economic reform programs spearheaded by the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. Saudi Entertainment and Amusement (SEA) expo offered over 90 regional and international suppliers the perfect platform to display their products from rides for amusement parks, adventure sports equipment, security equipment, stage and lighting equipment to entertainment technology including virtual reality, augmented reality, 12D cinema to leading industry stakeholders including government authorities, owners, developers, investors and operators of malls, cinemas, theme parks, restaurants, family entertainment centers and other entertainment, leisure and tourist attractions.

Saudi Arabian market has great potential

The response to the show has been overwhelmingly positive with satisfied exhibitors looking forward to the next edition of the Saudi Entertainment and Amusement (SEA) expo. Nabil Kassim, CEO of Warehouse of Games, one of the show’s featured exhibitors said, “We are very pleased with the outcome and we hope this show will expand and become a major show for the entertainment and amusement industry. Definitely, we will participate in the next event that will take place in Riyadh next year and we will be happy to be a part of it.” Thomas Mitmannsgruber, CEO of HPS Play Company went on to say, “We were curious on how it, the exhibition, will go but we have been positively surprised about the response we have been receiving. We had good meetings and discussions and we are very positive about the show and we are already talking about participating in the show next year.”

From the perspective of the first SEA expo, Saudi Arabia has great development potential and space.

Saudi Entertainment and Amusement (SEA) expo’s international exhibitors were treated to a site visit organized by the AlHokair Group - the largest investor in the Kingdom’s entertainment and hospitality sectors. The visit included senior members of the AlHokair Group giving the exhibitors a tour of their many entertainment and leisure properties across Jeddah city. This gesture stresses on the fact that Saudi Arabia is embracing the dawn of a new era.

The coming decade will witness a range of iconic developments to establish Saudi Arabia as a hub for leisure and entertainment within the Arabian peninsula as well as internationally. The progressive plan to transition from being an oil-based economy to a more diverse one saw a decade-long ban on cinemas being lifted. Featuring the in Kingdom’s entertainment and leisure pipeline are 350 cinemas scheduled to be in operation by 2030, a $500 Million entertainment city almost as big as Las Vegas, 16 entertainment complexes, an aquatic center, a $400 million community-based incubator for contemporary art, comedy, theater, and filmmaking, and more.

Vision 2030 is the driving force

It was not just the exhibitors, the visitors too had positive feedback about the show, like Nazin Alostaz, Senior Project Manager – Sedco Development who said, “I am very happy to be at the show because it is aligned with the Kindgom’s Vision 2030. There are some great products here that you would not usually find in the market along with a good variety of suppliers – it is a great place to come to for someone who wants to venture into the entertainment and leisure sector.”

As the world’s largest oil exporter, Saudi Arabia is hugely dependent on oil. Through Vision 2030, the Crown Prince hopes to bolster the private sector in areas like health care, mining and entertainment. Sarkis Kahwaijan, Event Director – SEA said, “The Kingdom is at the cusp of an entertainment and leisure revolution. Saudi Entertainment and Amusement (SEA) exhibition offers exhibitors and participants unique access to buyers as well as assist in establishing contacts and building relationships that will be key for the fast-paced development phase of the country’s entertainment and leisure sector”. The next edition of the Saudi Entertainment and Amusement (SEA) expo is set to take place in February 2020 at the Riyadh International Convention Centre, Riyadh.
