Glory of Centennial Anniversary, It’s All Here:Asian Attractions Expo 2018 Marks Successful Event

Hosted by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), Asian Attractions Expo 2018 (AAE) took place 5-8 June 2018, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Hong Kong, China.  Preliminary estimates from the organizer indicate the Expo featured a full trade show floor at 10,224 net square meters, attracting more than 9,000 participants from more than 50 countries, including 6,500 qualified buyers and 393 exhibiting companies.  Increases in participants, buyers and exhibiting companies from 2017’s event in Singapore reflect the strength and the energy of the global attractions industry.

Overview of the Expo
At 9 am on June 6th, a Chinese-style performance kicked off the opening ceremony of the Expo, including high-energy entertainment and a traditional Chinese mask-changing performance from Chimelong Park, Guangdong, China.  During the event, Hal McEvoy, interim president and CEO of IAAPA, expressed gratitude to the sponsors and guests who have been supporting IAAPA for it’s long-term development, saying “We were excited to bring Asian Attractions Expo 2018 back to Hong Kong.  This is the only show IAAPA hosts in Asia and the international representation from exhibiting companies and attendees demonstrated the appeal of the destination, and the strength of the global attractions industry.”

Mr. Hal McEvoy, interim president and CEO of IAAPA.

Michael Wong, JR, Secretary for Development of the Hong Kong KSAR Government addressed Expo participants during the event’s Opening Ceremony.  He expressed his gratitude to the organizer for choosing Hong Kong as the location for the Expo again, and said that Hong Kong was selected as the most worthwhile city by overseas media, which reflects the advantages of Hong Kong’s tourism resources.  Besides, the renewal of landmark attractions such as Disney Land and Ocean Park makes Hong Kong's tourism resources more competitive, and Hong Kong will also continue to focus on meeting the travel needs of global tourists.  Because of the 100th anniversary of IAAPA, three new members of the IAAPA Hall of Fame were also announced at the ceremony: Mr. Masatomo Takahashi, Mr. Kelly Tarlton, and Mr. Bernard Harrison.

After the opening ceremony, a high flow of qualified buyers showed up on the floor; even the typhoon bad weather couldn't stop their enthusiasm.  At 2~3pm, the number of people reached the peak.  Since IAPPA has always focused on the development of the global attractions industry, the majority of the buyers came from large theme parks, FECs, resorts, water parks, large attractions and other industries, searching for large outdoor amusement equipment, water equipment, landscape design, park planning and other related products and services.  For Hong Kong is a highly prosperous international metropolis with the third highest population density in the world, qualified buyers from developed countries such as America, France, Germany and Malaysia could be seen around the hall.  The rapid economic and social development makes it become one of the “Asian Tigers”, but also makes it one of the richest, most economically developed and highest standard of living cities in the world.

AAE 2018 attracted 390+ exhibitors from home and abroad.

However, the hall was divided into two areas: Hall 3B-3E and Hall 3F-3G.  Because of the distance and the deeper location of Hall 3F-3G, compared with Hall 3B-3E, the flow of people was less.  Besides, the hang-style, stand-up and ground-mounted guide signs which could be seen everywhere, the organizer also set up a “First Time Exhibitor Pavilion”, which not only ensured the new exhibitor maximum exposure, but also made it easier for the buyers to become familiar with them.

Various kinds of products displayed in the expo, covering inflatables, VR, AR, kiddies rides, outdoor & indoor amusement equipment and so on.

GTI strives for China attractions industry!

GTI strove for China attractions industry, and introduced GTI expos and magazines to buyers.

In this year, a group of elite people from GTI was sent to the Expo at Hall 3D 【Booth No.: 1533】.  GTI is devoted to the promotion of Chinese products, so we distributed a large number of China Amuse, Vision of China Amusement (Russian Edition, Arabic Edition), Game Time International, and also distributed publicity materials of GTI Guangzhou Expo, GTI Kuala Lumpur Expo and GTI Taipei Expo, to promote the products and GTI Expos.  We sincerely invite domestic and foreign buyers to visit GTI Guangzhou Expo in September.  During the three-day expo, a number of buyers inquired about the GTI Expos and left information for the magazines.

Communication with the organizer

GTI was invited to interview with Mr. Hal McEvoy, Mr. Andreas Andersen, the chairman of the board of IAAPA and Ms. June Ko, the vice president of Asia Pacific Operations of IAAPA with great honor.

GTI: What are the new breakthroughs and changes in this year's Expo?
AAE: When we came to Hong Kong last time, we had about 350 exhibitors. And this year we came back to Hong Kong and the number has exceeded 390.  Every year we can see the growth in the number of exhibitors, which also means that more new products and services will appear at the show for buyers.  At the same time, the exhibition area is growing.  As the organizer, we feel very excited about all of these.  Besides, we have more than 60% of participants coming from all over the world to gather together in Hong Kong, we are very excited about that.

GTI: Now the Chinese market is gradually concerned about the importance of intellectual property and begins to introduce a lot of popular IPs, such as the coming Peppa Pig Theme Park and Legoland Them Park in Shanghai.  So would you please give some advice for the introduction of hot IPs?
AAE: IP is used by a lot of parks to develop new attractions, these IPs may be related to famous movies or celebrities.  We have visited places like China and Japan to investigate these different parks.  My personal experience is that IP is very important in culture.  As we have mentioned, our industry is creating happiness for people so that every visitor can have fun, and the use of IP in the world is different.  Many things in the industry are very creative and innovative; we can see the use of many IPs, such as in different games or virtual activities.  This is an innovative industry, manufacturers and suppliers may continue to use IP to create better attractions and attract guests.  Of course, the most critical issue is to understand the local market and ensure the IP is suitable for this market.  For example, in Disneyland, which opened in Shanghai in 2016, part of the service experiences offered by the park is the “real Disney” experiences that only the Disney can offer.  Meanwhile, it is also a unique experience that integrates with local Chinese culture.

GTI: Chinese exhibitors have strong demands on buyers that are from commercial real estate, cultural tourism and theme parks, so what efforts have been made by AAE to invite these buyers?
AAE: In order to promote new products and services, one of the most important activities at the show is a variety of news briefing for the exhibitors, a variety of new products and services will be released.  In addition, we invite professionals from different industries if their work involves providing different forms of entertainment, such as retail, hospitality, catering, shopping, or other entertainment operators.  At the expo, they just come to a one-stop service platform and can find out the use of some new technologies at any time.

*For more questions:
Q: Concerning the products, can you tell us which are the highlights in your mind that you feel you were the most impressed by?
A: I think our industry in general is innovative, and I think that what you see on the show floor here is that the manufacturers and suppliers for our industry are very often some of the first movers to adapt technology, and create new games experiences.  So what impressed me the most are all the new technologies you will find on the show floor.

Q: Comparing Chinese products with overseas products, what are the advantages of Chinese products?  And do you have any advice to Chinese manufacturers?
A: From a global perspective, we see the Chinese amusement park, theme park, and attraction sector as growing very rapidly in the near future.  And with that growth, we also see more and more manufacturers that supply to the industry.  As we have seen in other parts of the world, when the industry matures, the suppliers to the industry will both mature and grow with that industry becoming even more professional, more advanced, and more competitive.  And I think we will see these in China as well.  Recently, we were in Qingdao to see Wanda introducing their studios, theme parks and water park, the attractions there are very innovative and state of the art.  So you are looking around the world, whatever we are, our manufacturers, suppliers around the world are creating some of the innovative and unique attractions to please our guests.  I think China is very much keeping up and having the latest technologies like the rest of the world.

Q: We know IAAPA is celebrating its 100th anniversary, what are the next plans for IAAPA to promote the future work?
A: This year is the 100th anniversary of IAAPA, we are celebrating the past and building the future.  At the end of a series of celebrations this year, we will host a major event in Orlando, USA.  We have to, based on the present, focus on the future.  Therefore, we have always maintained close contact with manufacturers, suppliers and operators, to ensure the services provided by the people are constantly innovating.  We are in an industry that is creating happy and funny, while celebrating the past, we have also to set the pace for future development.  Besides, because of the rapid growth rate in recently years, we believe that the main growth of the industry will happen in Southeast Asia, and we will continue to provide support to the region.  Recently, the IAAPA office in Shanghai was officially opened, which is also a very important milestone for us.

Q: AAE is back to Hong Kong this year, how will you promote the further development of the industry, to extend or even affect the entire Asia Pacific region?
A: We are glad to be back to Hong Kong this year and see the growth of the market in the region.  During the show, we provide 7 media briefings, which make the exhibitors very excited.  At the same time, the education networking has been strengthened this year, and a series of study tours have been arranged for participants to exchange learning and networking.  In the future, we will continue to provide our members with these kinds of activities for resource sharing.

Q: With more than 390 exhibitors participating in the Expo, what are the kinds of benefits that AAE will bring to them?
A: As we have mentioned, more than 60% of the participants in this show come from 50 countries and regions around the world, we also arranged a series of exciting educational activities for everyone to network, I believe these will satisfy our exhibitors.  We are committed to bring the best talents and resources to the show, so that participants can share resources and exchange experiences.  Besides, we also have a professional membership service support team that will provide strong services to our members.

The Asian Attractions Expo 2019 will be held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center in Shanghai, China, from June 11-14.  See you next year!
